Hayden, do not worry when you “digress.” Your digressions always seem to contan very useful and practical information that adds even more value to the seminars.
Enjoyed and learned from listening to the difference between the “more grounded” standard voicings and the more airy quartal voicings. .Great to have options.
Thanks Humberto – I’m glad that you find my digressions useful :-)
It is indeed great to have options when playing jazz piano.
In my opinion the quality of our jazz piano playing is directly correlated to the variety of voicings that we have at our fingertips!
Cheers,
Hayden
Great seminar as always.. I found what helped me with the so what voicings was to just think R,4 in the left hand and a standard minor triad in the right just with the thumb dropped a tone for the b7. Either that or think of the relative major triad in its second inversion (for the right hand) that helped me anyway!
Hi Robbie,
Yes that’s the optimal way to analyse and memorise chord voicings.
I always try to create a ‘numeric formula’ or ‘ intervallic blueprint’ which I can visualise on the piano and easily move to different keys. I do this for chord voicings, chord progressions, and also melody lines.
When drilling chord voicings like this, eventually muscle memory takes over and the process of finding voicings on the keyboard is almost subconscious.
Keep up the great work!
Cheers,
Hayden
