Turnarounds For F Blues
In this lesson we’ll look at the structure of 12-bar blues and explore some of the embellishments we can apply to the basic chord progression.
Using a basic jazz blues chord progression as the basis for our embellishments, we will gradually layer in more harmonically-interesting chord voicings and cadences.
Embellishments On The Standard Form
In this lesson we explore the following embellishments:
- Dominant chords from a 4th below
- V7 of V7 substitutions
- The 36251 turnaround
- The 1625 turnaround
- Tritone substitution
- Chromatic 25s
Many of the reharmonisations we cover involve tritone substitution. If this concept is new to you, check out the related lessons below.

Changing the chords we use will guide our comping and our walking bass lines.
Make sure you've checked out the lessons on walking bass lines and comping which we covered earlier in this course.
Remember you must be sensitive to the soloist if you're accompanying someone.
There is always some amount of embellishment that's too much, and the amount depends on the soloist.
