Triads and the Minor 251 Progression

In this lesson Jovino expands on the material covered in the last lesson to include the minor 251. He looks at the most common chord forms in the minor 251 and shows how the chord qualities lend themselves to natural voice leading.

He then adds the six chord to the progression and shows how it can be either a half-diminished or a dominant chord depending on the situation.

Triad Options for the Minor 251

Jovino covers various triad options for the minor 251 progression and demonstrates by improvising using these triads.

Practice Tips

  • Try creating your own improvised melodies using Jovino's principles of voice leading in this video.

  • The variations on the basic progression can yield very different results - explore the differences between the flat 9 and natural 9 on the 2 chord and the differences between the half-diminished and dominant chord as the 6.

  • Take these variations to some minor key songs and find some new sonorities on familiar material.
