Você e Eu Tutorial

In this lesson we will look at a tune by one of the exponents of the Bossa Nova movement – Carlos Lyra – called "Você e Eu". The tune is harmonically very rich and includes an introduction which, in a way, creates a representation of the samba by having a strong hit on beat 2 of a 2/4 bar.

The melody itself is very chromatic but makes harmonic sense, even when played without the chords.

Practice Tips

  • Check out some recordings of street samba and see how the big hit on beat 2 in the interlude relates to the role of the bass drum or surdo drum.

  • The transcription pdf above should be a great help for learning how Jovino accompanies himself with a samba groove while playing the melody and improvising.

  • Try taking some of the chromatic ideas in the melody and using those as a basis for improvisation.
