In this live seminar we take a deep dive into the tune “How High The Moon”. We explore the form, basic voicings, and then discuss some more advanced arranging techniques and principles.

Such a WONDERFUL seminar, Hayden! Thank You! Always tons of great stuff to learn from! Fully enjoyed it! Would love to add this in my songs to study and playlist š
Hayden says
Thanks Tina – I’m glad you enjoyed the seminar.
I will be creating a dedicated tutorial on this tune – both beginner and advanced arrangements.
Cheers, Hayden

This was a great seminar. I would love to see more of these where you take a tune you have not yet covered and go through how you would arrange it.
Thanks so much!!!

Yes great idea Celia… I am going to schedule 2 jazz standard seminars per month and I agree it’s a nice idea to cover tunes not covered before so we are starting from the ground up. These seminars are fun to teach and it seems the students like them too so it’s a perfect combination! :–)
Cheers, Hayden

Brilliant, thanks for letting me know Richard.
During the seminar I referenced this lesson on targeting the #11 colour over dominant chords: https://www.pianogroove.com/jazz-piano-lessons/altered-chord-drills-sharp-11/ – check that out and I have also added it to the related lessons in the bottom right of the page.
See you in the next seminar.

Thank you so much. Very helpful to have a “checklist” for a new tune. Would really appreciate the cheatsheet for the exercises.
Hayden says
My pleasure Wendy. And thanks for the cheatsheet idea for the descending 251 variations in whole steps. I can come up with a list of exercises no problem from beginner to advanced.
It’s a great suggestion and i will put this together next week with some accompanying lessons.
Cheers, Hayden

Hi Richard,
Have you tried using the video chapters? Simply click a video chapter and you will move to that part of the video.
Perhaps this is a bug specific to your device or browser, if you send me an email i can investigate this for you. Please fill out any of the contact forms on the website and it lands in my inbox.
You can also try using a different web browser (Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer etc…) often these issues are browser specific and so please try that too and it will help me to diagnose the problem if there is one.
Cheers, Hayden
ps. Glad to hear you are learning a lot from these sessions. Lots more to come.

Finally got my keyboard back and fixed from Yamaha just under the warranty expiration date; and tuned in to this seminar on my new computer. My last Mac was 10 years old, so I think I’m finally good to go. I recall doing the 251 whole step, & when the pdf of the drill your’e doing around 147 secs I will want to spend lots of time with them. This was a wonderful class…looking forward to the follow-up on w/ How High the Moon.

Hi, Hayden
I have been watching and very much enjoying this seminar video. However, I don’t see your hands, only the highlighted notes in a second, virtual keyboard. Was it simply recorded like this, or am I not using some function to view both keyboards?
Cheers,
Jorge
Hayden says
Hi Jorge,
Apologies for the late reply here, Iām just catching up on comments and emails after the Xmas/New year break!
Yes this seminar was recorded in May 2021 at which point I was still developing the live stream layout and my technical capabilities. It was in August 2021 when I found a way to show both the overhead camera and the light up keyboard in the live streams, and so all seminars from this date onwards are in this format.
I know showing just the light up keyboard is not clear for left and right hand breakdown, and so I apologise that it’s difficult to extract information from the earlier seminars that I hosted. This will not happen with any live seminars in the future.
I’m also hosting a seminar tomorrow at 12 noon EST – https://www.pianogroove.com/live-seminars/how-to-transcribe/ – hope to see you there.
Let me know if I can help further here and wishing you a very happy new year! :–)
Cheers, Hayden
