Start Playing Jazz Piano in Just 7 Days
If you’re new to jazz piano and you’re unsure where to begin, the 7-Day Jazz Piano Jumpstart will give you the foundations you need to get started.
PianoGroove’s Jazz Piano Jumpstart is a 7-day beginner course designed to give you a clear, practical introduction to jazz piano without overwhelming you with too much theory.
Throughout the course, we use the jazz standard “Moon River” to learn important jazz concepts in context, rather than studying chords and theory in isolation.
By the end of the jumpstart, you’ll understand some of the fundamental building blocks of jazz piano and, more importantly, you’ll know how to start applying them at the keyboard.
The course is designed specifically for students who are brand new to jazz piano, including pianists coming from a classical or sheet-music background.
Learn To Read & Understand Lead Sheets
Jazz musicians usually work from lead sheets, which show the melody and chord symbols rather than fully written-out piano arrangements.
During the Jumpstart, you’ll learn how to interpret these chord symbols and gradually turn them into a sophisticated jazz piano arrangement.
We’ll look at the most common types of chords, how they are constructed, and how they appear on a lead sheet so that the notation starts to feel familiar and intuitive.
Build Richer Chords With Spread Voicings
One of the first steps towards a more authentic jazz piano sound is learning how to move beyond simple root-position chords.
In the Jumpstart, you’ll learn how to create spread voicings by distributing chord tones across both hands. This produces a fuller, more balanced sound and gives you a practical way to interpret chord symbols directly from a lead sheet.
These voicings form an essential foundation for the more advanced harmony you’ll encounter later in PianoGroove.
Add Expression With Melodic Embellishment
Jazz piano isn’t just about playing the written melody exactly as it appears on the page. In fact, the melody on lead sheets is often deliberately simplified to give more creative freedom to the arranger.
We explore simple ways to add melodic embellishment, helping the melody sound more expressive and less rigid. Small changes in rhythm, phrasing, and note choice can make a familiar melody feel much more personal.
The goal is to start developing the confidence to move beyond the notation while still preserving the character of the song. Throughout the jumpstart, you’ll be encouraged to see the lead sheet as a starting point rather than a fixed set of instructions.
Your Next Steps In Jazz Piano
By the end of the 7-day Jumpstart, you’ll have worked with lead sheets, 7th chords, spread voicings, melodic embellishment, and some of the most important chord progressions used in jazz standards.
In the final lesson, we’ll bring these ideas together and look at where to go next.
Depending on your musical goals, you can continue into more focused courses covering areas such as jazz harmony and voicings, improvisation, blues, jazz standards, and developing greater freedom when playing from lead sheets.
The aim is to leave the Jumpstart with both a solid foundation and a clear direction for your continued studies.
